The Sixth Virtue

Posted on 2004.06.01 at 16:33
Justice is practiced only under compulsion. Bounded on each side by asp and asphodel, I will give each to each what is theirs--or else I will hoard everything to myself, what is due them and what is due me, until I take all their punishments onto my own flesh, and all my ascendant vapours into my lungs, and become a body of deserving, bent until my nose brushes the ground with the gangrenous karma of every flagellation ever passed from leather to breast.

Give me the death you own, I will close it in a litle box and wear it around my neck like a relic of St. John--a shrunken head, black and sere, tufts of embalmed hair wisping into the air. I will travel over Holy Land with a gown of boxes, and what a music I shall make, the clodding of wood against wood, death against maiming against suicides, I will perform all your penances on the hot dirt. I will practice justice, over and over, until my body is a mass of rosary-welts, and purified in the marrow of stars.

Thank you. I am surprised and gladdened--I was thinking it was lame, gimpy, footless.

I like tha bargaining, the equity, the formal tit for tat ... formal isn't the word. Cold. Passionless. I think you can do more with it - flesh, leather, breast ... these can all be warm and living. Justice to me is colder, more austere.

Oh, yes, I plan to, I just needed to get a few things on the page, so to speak. ;)

Understood.

Justice to me is "letter-of-the-law" and my husband is all too fond of it. I call it his "Stannis" side. His compassion, humility and creativity are his "Davos" side.

One day I will categorize people according to characters in your fiction. How cool is THAT? :)

Massively, undeniably, shiver-in-boots cool.

I was going more for the first definition of Justice in the Republic--giving to each what is due to them. the italicized line is a quote. ;) But then, I've got my classical side working overtime...I guess that would be...Melisandre?

Hmmm ... Martin doesn't have any writers primarily figured in his world. I'd say that Melisandre is the true Wicked Queen (and therefore more you), Cersei is the princess playing with power and not quite knowing what to do with it.

ha ha. I meant the ancient knowledge part...no, fantasy novels rarely feature the writer as anything but a kicked-about bard.

Melisandre definitely for the ancient knowledge - though Dany may catch her up and pass her somehow. We don't know what the Dragons are capable of and if they have racial memory as well as instinct.

Guy Gavriel Kay is good at making artisans the protagonists - musicians in Tigana, a mosaicist in Sailing to Sarantium ... but there's always an exception.

Ach, thought I'd add you on this one too.

What really galls me about this entry - apart from the fact that the corporeal tableau of it all really stunned me into lexicographic shock - is that it'd be disgustingly, ridiculously perfect for this sodding 'creative response' thing I'm to submit soon at bloody uni. And plagiarism is one of those few things I'm disinclined to participate in. Pooh.

Bloody hell, I'm a great big cretin. I meant to make that comment in response to this post of yours. And for some equally cretinous reason, it ended up here. Ach.

The so-called 'creative piece' I'm meant to submit for said Feminist Film subject is meant to amalgamate themes like female subjectivity, corporeality, sexuality et al (all the usual poxy Judith Butler-inspired twaddle), which was why I made that particular remark. That post would have made a perfect non-poxy piece, given my criteria.
